SDG 8

GOAL: PROMOTE SUSTAINED. INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH. FULL AND PRODUCTIVE EMPLOYMENT AND DECENT WORK FOR ALL.

“Economic growth should be a positive force for the whole planet. This is why we must make sure that financial progress creates decent and fulfilling jobs while not harming the environment. We must protect labour rights and once and for all put a stop to modern slavery and child labour. If we promote job creation with expanded access to banking and financial services, we can make sure that everybody gets the benefits of entrepreneurship and innovation.”

Enactus Project Inspiration

The Rubbish Group, Enactus Loughborough

Set up in 2022 after being inspired by the Bentley iTwin4Good Competition, the Rubbish Group’ aims to reduce littering around the Loughborough University campus by enabling students to report where litter has been dropped on an interactive mobile app.

This app is paired with a Digital Twin of the campus, allowing rubbish reports to be mapped to their specific location. The concentration of reports will be logged using a heat map feature, which will show the university site team where more bins are needed. Over time, this will give an accurate representation of campus, and where the most litter is dropped. Their application will address three main Sustainable Development Goals: good health and wellbeing, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action.

“The Rubbish Group is prioritising the environment at Loughborough’s campus using innovative technology.”

Want to know what makes The Rubbish Group an EXCELLENT Enactus Project? Read on below!

    • The Rubbish Group aimed to tackle the littering problem on the University of Loughborough campus.

    • The project enables students to report where litter has been dropped with their interactive mobile app, which is paired with a digital twin of the campus.

    • Litter can be pinpointed to its specific location and the concentration of reports can be tracked using a heat map style to identify the need for more bins in certain areas.

    • “We want university students to learn more about the infrastructure engineering solutions of the future while solving issues that affect the planet today. Not only have these students shown incredible creativity, but they have also produced genuine solutions that could have a real impact in meeting sustainable development goals. What’s more, by producing their own infrastructure digital twins, these students will have a real advantage when they enter the engineering workforce.” - Zeljko Djuretic, Head of Bentley Education
