Enactus Project Inspiration
Taka Taka Zero, Enactus Durham
Set up in September 2022, Taka Taka Zero (Zero Rubbish in Swahili!) is fuelling sustainable futures through waste conversion.
TTZ’s vision is to provide the best sustainable solution for low-income communities to cope with and make use of the abundance of non-recyclable waste while creating food and job security for their most vulnerable young people. They envision a future that is led by educated, environmentally-conscious individuals who have experienced these challenges first-hand and have received the needed support to transform their experience into positive change in their communities and beyond.

Youth Unemployment - In Nairobi, youth unemployment in the Kibera area is at 35%.
Waste Ambumdance - 4,000 tons of waste are added to Kibera landfills and 75% is burned for disposal.
Food Insecurity - 90% of families in Kibera are food insecure.

At its launch in September 2022, Taka Taka Zero provided breakfast and lunch for 300 children. They provided training for 18-23 year-olds in waste management knowledge. Finally, improving waste disposal and management in slum areas helps tackle taboo and develop environmentally conscious future leaders.
Taka Taka Zero has also supplied the Community Cooker, a large cooking stove, fuelled by non-recyclable waste which is turned into safe and clean energy. In only two hours, it can cook 77 litres of food and heat 800 litres of water!

Taka Taka Zero have provided 3,140 meals per week, and implemented healthier foods into children’s diets, increasing their ability to succeed in education!
The Community Cooker burnt 3,601,000 kgs of rubbish and 147,000 trees saved so far!
